Washington State has positioned itself as a trailblazer in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the development of a robust charging infrastructure. The state's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is evident in its efforts to promote clean transportation through widespread access to charging stations and the recent availability of grant funding.
Washington’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan
In July 2023, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) submitted an updated Washington State Plan for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment to the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. In the plan, Washington State notes that it expects to invest about $71 million from this program over five years, along with a 20 percent non-federal match of $17.75 million. The funds will be used to expand the state’s public charging network and create a more equitable experience for EV drivers.
In addition to public charging infrastructure, Washington has also embraced residential and workplace charging solutions. This approach encourages EV adoption by making charging convenient and accessible for drivers, reinforcing the state's dedication to fostering sustainable transportation where drivers need it most. Studies show that 80% of EV charging happens at home and work.
Washington State Department of Commerce Grant
In August 2023, the Washington State Department of Commerce announced a grant program to provide $64 million in funding for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Organizations eligible to apply by the December 1, 2023 deadline included public agencies (i.e. counties, cities, public schools), tribal governments, retail electric utilities, and community-based non-profits. Eligible sites for EV charging station installation included multifamily housing, public charging, fleet depots, and workplaces.
Washington State is a model for the nation in terms of its comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to EV charging infrastructure. With government support and a commitment to renewable energy, Washington has positioned itself at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, setting an example for other regions to follow.
