Los Angeles Needs More EV Chargers
Over 1.8 million ZEVs have been sold in California to date with a little more than 105,000 public charging stations to support them (CEC). With over 100,000 new EV registrations coming from LA county in Q3 2024 alone, there are only 18,000 public Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations and 43,000 private stations in LA county (CEC). There is a major gap between the number of EVs on the road and the number of available stations. The math doesn’t lie, and for those who have access to a private station either at home or work, this isn’t an issue, but for those who don’t, plugging into consistent and reliable charging can be a challenge.
These figures are why LADWP has its EV charger rebate programs in place. The utility knows by accelerating the installation of EV charging stations it will not only help support the current population of EV drivers but ease the apprehension of those looking to purchase an EV as their next vehicle.
80% of EV Charging Happens at Home or Work
Studies have found that the majority of EV charging happens where cars are typically parked the most, at drivers’ homes or workplaces. This is often done through the use of Level 2 charging stations which can charge most EVs to full in around 5-7 hours which aligns well with typical sleep and work schedules. LADWP has embraced this trend by providing a rebate specifically for commercial properties. While most people think commercial properties are retail stores and shopping malls, they also include office spaces and multifamily properties like apartments and condos – covering home and work. This is a huge benefit for EV drivers since as a renter or condo owner it can be very difficult to get a charger installed. With its rebate program, LADWP is providing funding so these property owners can install up to 80 Level 2 charging stations for little to no cost. Talk about a win-win – EV drivers get charging where they need it most and property owners make their current and future residents and tenants happy without having to spend a fortune.
LADWP Commercial Properties are Saving Hundreds of Thousands on EV Chargers
Through the LADWP Commercial EV Charger Rebate Program, eligible properties can install up to 80 Level 2 EV chargers and obtain rebates for up to $400k in hardware and installation costs. This program also provides funding for the installation of Level 3 DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations as well as allocates priority and additional funding for properties located within disadvantaged communities (DAC).
